GRANDFRIENDS:
Grandfriends is a program unique to Hawthorne Elementary. Its goal is to invite grandparents and other senior members of the community to volunteer in the classroom throughout the year. The Chair for this committee usually hosts a small breakfast in the Fall for the grandfriends. The breakfast welcomes them back to the school, allows introductions to the administration and the teachers they are assigned to for the year. Following the breakfast, the grandfriends usually volunteer in the classroom once a week. This is a very rewarding position that requires a few hours at the beginning of the year to organize the breakfast and then touch base with the grandfriends a few times throughout the year.

Forms must be sent home to each child requesting either information to be publicized and or an option to opt out of the directory. If student | parent opt out of directory, then no personal information can be publicized. However the student’s name can be listed as part of the classroom. The purpose is to supply a student | school directory that is printed and delivered to each family by October.

  Maggie DeFilippo maggiedefilippo@bellsouth.net

TRANSLATION & INTERPRETATION:
The chair of this committee helps bring more fully our Spanish-speaking community into school life. It is necessary to be bi-lingual (Spanish/English), and have a warm heart. The committee members would assist families with limited English, by leading focus groups, helping at registration, and finding people to translate for meetings. This position has a lot of potential for growth as there are many ways we can continue to offer more services.

WEBSITE:
The chair maintains the www.hawthorne-elementary.org website, its development and ensures that information sent from the corresponding secretary is placed on the website.

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEES
REBATES/FREE MONEY:
The Free Money Committee at Hawthorne promotes all Free Money programs that include Box Tops Labels, Campbell's Labels, Publix Partners Program, Office Depot Rebate Program, and Target Take Charge of Education. These programs are promoted in several ways. Brochures are sent out at the beginning of the school year to parents explaining the various programs. There are also 2 contests held during the school year to raise money from Box Tops and Campbell's. The contests usually raise over $1,000 each year. The various Free Money programs combined raise around $3,000 per year (depending on the year). The chairperson coordinates all the contests and promotional activities at Hawthorne. The committee members assist the chairperson in counting labels received from the contests as well as coming up with new fundraising ideas for the committee. The committee is active the entire school year but the busiest time(s) are twice a year during the contests.

CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES COMMITTEES
ACCELERATED READER:
Accelerated Reader is a software program that is used to promote reading. Students take a test on books read throughout the school year and earn points for their correct answers. The test can be taken in the classroom or in the school's library. At Hawthorne, the committee works with the librarian, Ms. Jones, in promoting the AR program and helps with various incentives/contests used to promote the program. The program runs the entire school year so the chairperson would need to devote at least several hours a month depending on the incentives chosen for the school year. The chairperson(s) would also meet once a month with the Media Center Committee.

REFLECTIONS:
The PTA Reflections Program provides students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition. The program has six arts areas—dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts—and four grade divisions—primary, intermediate, middle/junior, and senior. Students enter their pieces based on that year’s theme and compete amongst other students at Hawthorne. The top winners are then sent on to compete at the county level, etc. all the way up to the national level. This program helps students express themselves through words, pictures, music, dance, film, and other art media. The Reflections Program helps parents encourage the creativity, self-discovery, and lifelong learning of their children. Supporting the PTA Reflections Program is one way you can increase student achievement, foster student talents, and promote the arts.
The Reflections committee of 2-4 usually holds a workshop or two, providing students with the tools and opportunity to create their masterpiece. The bulk of the program takes place in September and October and then we hold a judging. The chosen pieces in each category are then prepared and sent on to compete against other students their age in the county. We have had students go on to the state level in the past. Some examples of past themes are: “Beauty is...”, “I can make a difference by....”. You can find out more information about this program by going to PTA.org and clicking on Reflections in the Programs menu.

ROOM PARENT COORDINATORS:
HOMEROOM COORDINATORS
As room parent coordinator, you are the voice of reasoning between room parents and parents. You are there to make sure teachers have parental support! Most importantly, you are responsible for providing room parents with information about monthly teacher luncheons, the winter party, silent auction, teacher appreciation week, end of the year party, and any other events requiring their assistance. Your responsibilities start once school begins and end at the end of the year. However, 98% of your work is done via e-mail. With that said, you have to check your e-mails on a regular basis. This is a good way to meet a lot of parents and be involved and know what is going on around school!

Twice a year Hawthorne’s cafeteria is transformed into a giant movie theater. Children bring blankets and pillows and there are concessions to buy as well as some light dinner. Chairs enlist volunteers to work the concessions as well as get the cafeteria set up. Time commitment is usually a few hours twice a year before the event. This is always a well attended community building event!

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK:
Chairs for this event, held in the Spring, start working with their committee in the Winter planning the activities for this great week honoring our teachers. In years past, every day of teacher appreciation week had an event or gift for the teachers. Some ideas included a breakfast, homemade cards and flowers for the teachers by the students, and some kind of gift like a tote bag or other item at the end of the week. While this position does require some planning, it is a really great way to show our teachers how much we care about them and there is always a large number of committee members to help plan the week!
